Frequently Asked Questions
What is WebsiteUpTest?
WebsiteUpTest is a free online tool that checks if a website or IP address is accessible from multiple global locations. It helps you determine if a website is down for everyone or just for you.
How does the website check work?
When you enter a URL or IP address, our servers send HTTP requests from three different geographic locations (US East, EU West, and Asia Pacific). We then analyze the responses to determine if the website is online and accessible.
Why check from multiple locations?
Checking from multiple locations helps distinguish between:
- Global outages (website is down everywhere)
- Regional issues (website works in some regions but not others)
- Local problems (the issue is with your connection, not the website)
What does "Website is UP" mean?
A website is considered "UP" when at least 2 of our 3 monitoring locations receive a valid HTTP response (status codes 200-499) from the server. This indicates the website is generally accessible worldwide.
What does "Website is DOWN" mean?
A website is marked as "DOWN" when fewer than 2 locations receive a valid response. This could indicate server issues, DNS problems, or that the website is offline.
Can I check IP addresses?
Yes! You can enter either a domain name (like google.com) or an IP address (like 8.8.8.8) to check its availability. This is useful for testing servers directly.
What do HTTP status codes mean?
HTTP status codes indicate the server's response:
- 200-299: Success - The website is working normally
- 300-399: Redirect - The page redirects to another URL
- 400-499: Client Error - Issues like "404 Not Found"
- 500-599: Server Error - The website has internal problems
- 0: No response - The server didn't respond at all
Why is the website down for me but up according to your test?
This usually indicates a local issue. Try these troubleshooting steps:
- Check your internet connection
- Try a different browser or device
- Clear your browser cache and cookies
- Flush your DNS cache
- Try using a VPN
- Check if your ISP or network is blocking the site
What is response time?
Response time measures how long it takes for the website's server to respond to our request, measured in milliseconds (ms). Lower response times indicate better performance. Typical values are:
- Under 200ms: Excellent
- 200-500ms: Good
- 500-1000ms: Average
- Over 1000ms: Slow
Is WebsiteUpTest free to use?
Yes, WebsiteUpTest is completely free to use. There's no registration required, no limits on how many checks you can perform, and no premium features hidden behind a paywall.
Do you store my data?
We only store the URLs/IPs that have been checked and their status results to display recent checks. We do not collect any personal information, and all checks are performed anonymously. See our Privacy Policy for more details.
How often are the checks performed?
Each check is performed in real-time when you request it. We do not continuously monitor websites. For ongoing monitoring, you would need to use a dedicated uptime monitoring service.
Can I use this for my business?
Absolutely! WebsiteUpTest is useful for businesses to quickly check if their website or competitors' sites are experiencing downtime. However, for critical business monitoring, we recommend using a dedicated uptime monitoring service with alerting capabilities.
